Black-Eyed Peas

These Southern-style Black-Eyed Peas, also known as Hoppin’ John, are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to those who eat them on New Year’s Day. We like to serve them with our Loveless Cafe Chow Chow and frankly, would be very happy eating them all year long.

This recipe is featured in our Loveless Cafe Cookbook!

Servings: 4

  1. Combine peas and water in a large pot. Add ham hock, garlic salt, black pepper, and red pepper.
  2. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and let simmer 1 hour or until the peas are tender. Stir occasionally, adding water if needed.
  3. Remove ham hock, cut meat from bone, then stir ham pieces into cooked peas. Serve with a topping of Chow Chow.
