Old-Fashioned Sawdust Pie

This long-time family favorite is perfect served with homemade, sweetened whipped cream, a large scoop of vanilla ice cream or yummy fruit like bananas.  Named for its ingredients, not its taste, old fashioned sawdust pie bakes up light and fluffy and moist. It’s not commonly served outside of the southeast region so keep this recipe close so as to always be able to make it for yourself!

Old-Fashioned Sawdust Pie




7 egg whites, unbeaten
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 1/2 cups crushed cookie crumbs*
1 1/2 cups pecans
1 1/2 cups coconut

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell


Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Mix all ingredients together and stir by hand. Pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake until glossy and set (about 25 to 30 minutes). Do not over bake! Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.


*Note: Traditionally, this recipe uses graham cracker crumbs, but we suggest crushing your favorite cookie for the recipe.  Our version in the Cafe uses homemade chocolate cookies.
